What is the cold war?
DescriptionThe Cold War refers to the period of political and military tension after World War II, until around 1991. The parties involed include the Eastern “Bloc” and the Western "Bloc”. The Eastern Bloc consisted of The Soviet Union and members of the Warsaw pact (Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovak, Romania, Poland, Hungary, and Germany). The Western block consisted of The United States and members of NATO (primarily countries in Europe). The Cold War was not a direct conflict between these countries, but rather indirect battle fought between them amongst separate conflicts in which they chose opposing sides. The most notable of these "proxy" wars that was fought is the Vietnam War which was fought from 1955-1975. In this war, the United States and Russia (the two main rivals of the Cold War) fought against one another. Although not a direct war between these two nations, their involvement in global conflicts against one another emphasized the differences between Democratic United states and Communist Russia. The Cold War was a major influence on many global conflicts
