New Policies Under Mao
- Great Leap Forward: Mass mobilization of labor to improve agricultural and industrial production. Results: Led to famine and the deaths of millions. Policy abandon afterwards.
- Cultural Revolution in 1966. Wanted to remove “impure” elements and revive the revolutionary spirit. Results: One and a half million people died and much of the country’s cultural heritage destroyed. Many cities were on the verge of anarchy in September 1967. Mao sent in the army to restore order.
- Industry under state ownership.
