cambodia and the khmer rouge
the rise of The COMMUNIST PARTY OF KAMPUCHEA
The Communist Party of Kampuchea (CPK), popularly known as the Khmer Rouge, rose to power in 1975, by revolting against the Cambodian government. They had kept their existence secret and hidden and until 1977. During the oppression in Cambodia, many who lost family members joined the Khmer rouge revolution. On April 17, 1975, Phnom Penh, fell to communist powers of Khmer rouge. The revolutions in Cambodia had ceased. The Khmer Rouge forced 2 million to evacuate to the countryside for agricultural work. Out of those 2 million, thousands had died during the evacuation. The Khmer Rouge also began to implement their radical Maoist and Marxist-Leninist transformation program at this time. Activities were seriously restricted in Cambodia.
During the Khmer Rouge rule they claimed that people were only pure when the fell under and ‘appreciated’ the communist oppression. This regime only came to an end when the Cambodians went to war with Vietnam. The Vietnamese invaded cambodia causing the Khmer Rouge to flee. The regime was finally ended in 1999 when most were forced to flee or were executed. During the rule many suffered and died.
